What to Do When You're Locked Out

First things first — take a breath. Lockouts feel urgent, but in most cases you have a little time to make a sensible decision. Before calling a locksmith, it's worth running through a quick mental checklist: have you tried every door and window? Does a family member, neighbour or landlord have a spare key nearby? Is your home insurance policy one of the many that includes emergency locksmith cover as standard?

If none of those options pan out, that's exactly what I'm here for. Give me a call, tell me where you are and what type of door you're locked out of, and I'll be on my way. I'll give you a clear, honest price over the phone before I set off — no hidden charges, no nasty surprises when I arrive.

House Lockouts

Being locked out of your own home is one of those situations nobody plans for — but it happens to the best of us. A set of keys left on the kitchen counter, a door that clicked shut behind you, a lock that's suddenly decided it doesn't want to cooperate. Whatever the reason, I'll get you back in as quickly and cleanly as possible. I use non-destructive entry techniques wherever possible, meaning in the vast majority of cases I can open your door without any damage to the lock or the door itself. You'd barely know I'd been there.

Flat & Apartment Lockouts

Flat lockouts come with their own complications — communal entry doors, concierge access, landlord obligations and the added stress of neighbours potentially being disturbed. I handle flat lockouts regularly across Borehamwood and the surrounding areas and I'll deal with the situation professionally and discreetly, getting you back inside with minimum fuss.

uPVC Door Lockouts

uPVC doors are by far the most common door type I attend for lockouts. They're generally reliable, but when they go wrong — whether it's a multipoint lock that's dropped, a cylinder that's failed, or a handle mechanism that's jammed — they can be tricky to open without the right tools and experience. I work with uPVC doors every day and carry the equipment needed to open them cleanly, without damage, in almost every scenario.

Composite Door Lockouts

Composite doors are becoming increasingly popular in Hertfordshire homes thanks to their strength and insulation. They're excellent doors — but when you're locked out of one, their robust construction can make entry more of a challenge. I have extensive experience working with composite doors and the multipoint locking systems they typically use, and I'll always attempt non-destructive entry before considering any other approach.

Lost Keys

If you've lost your keys rather than simply left them inside, it's worth thinking beyond just getting back in. Lost keys represent a potential security risk — particularly if they were lost somewhere identifiable, like near your home or attached to anything with your address on it. Once I've got you back inside, I'd recommend a lock change or cylinder replacement to make sure whoever finds your keys can't use them. I can take care of that in the same visit, quickly and at a fair price.

Broken Key Extraction

Keys break in locks more often than you'd think — usually at the worst possible moment. Whether it snapped off flush with the barrel or there's a small section still visible, I carry specialist extraction tools that allow me to remove broken keys cleanly from the lock in most cases, without needing to replace the entire lock. Once the key is out, I'll check the lock for any damage and advise you on whether it needs replacing or is good to go.

Non-Destructive Entry — Why It Matters

When you're locked out, the last thing you want is to end up with a damaged door or a lock that needs replacing unnecessarily. Non-destructive entry means using skill and specialist tools to open a lock without drilling it out or forcing the door. It takes more technique than simply drilling — but it saves you the cost of a replacement lock and leaves your door in exactly the condition it was before.

I will always attempt non-destructive entry first. If for any reason the lock genuinely cannot be opened without drilling — due to damage, a seized mechanism or an unusual lock type — I'll explain exactly why before touching anything, and I'll give you a clear price for the replacement lock before any work begins. You'll never be hit with unexpected costs.

Fair, Transparent Pricing

There are no call-out fees and no hidden charges. I'll give you a clear price over the phone before I arrive, and that's the price you'll pay. Locksmith pricing in the UK is unfortunately an area where rogue traders have given the industry a bad name — so I make it a point to be completely upfront about costs from the very first call. If you'd like to know roughly what to expect, a standard residential lockout during daytime hours typically starts from £80, with out-of-hours rates clearly explained when you call.

Available 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week

Lockouts don't stick to office hours and neither do I. I'm available around the clock, every day of the year — including weekends and bank holidays. Whether it's 2pm on a Tuesday or 3am on a Sunday, you'll get through to me directly. No call centre, no answering machine, no waiting for a callback. Just a local locksmith who'll pick up the phone and come and help.

Covering Borehamwood & the Surrounding Areas

I'm based in Borehamwood and cover a wide area across Hertfordshire and North London, including Elstree, Radlett, Barnet, Bushey, Potters Bar, Shenley, Mill Hill, Edgware, Stanmore and St Albans. Because I'm genuinely local, I know the area well and can reach most locations within 30 minutes.

Locked out right now? Don't wait — give me a call on 07939 022 528 and I'll be with you as soon as possible.
